The Van Norman Ranch is actually made up of five separate properties in this high desert region. All bear imaginative names like “The Meadows” and ‘Roseberry Ranch.’ The entire Van Norman property encompasses a somewhat rectangular territory that’s about twenty-five miles long by eight miles wide. In the hundreds of square miles of land, the plane plays an important role in every cattle roundup. In the old days it was easy to miss a few cows in the high sage brush and the steep canyons. Now, Dan can spy the strays from the air and radio down their locations to his cousins on horseback.”
